How many words do I need to be able to speak a language?

The basic vocabulary of a spoken language is typically around 1000 words. Then you can read almost 75% of the books and understand almost 85% of the conversations. Once you are there, you learn the next 1000 words much faster, and success comes faster and faster.

The first goal is to learn 1000 words with the minimum of effort. That means spending as little time as possible and as little stress as possible. This is important because many people find memorizing vocabulary not very enjoyable and/or relaxing, and quickly give up.

The Council of Europe has developed a Common European Framework of Reference for Languages in order to be able to compare different language certificates. The table gives a rough overview. The number of associated vocabulary is not defined and clearly depends on the respective language, but can be roughly estimated.

Level Vocabulary (estimated) Brief description
C2 5000 You can speak the language in all situations.
C1 4000 You can communicate fluently and practically without errors.
B2 3000 You can express your opinion on many different topics spontaneously and clearly.
B1 2000 You can find your way around the language in almost all everyday situations.
A2 1300 You can communicate in familiar situations with short sentences.
A1 800 You can understand and answer simple questions.

How can I improve myself so that, for example, I finally understand the news?

If you have a reasonable command of a language, you often find that you can have a conversation but understand almost nothing when the news reports on politics, the economy, society and finances. This requires memorizing the relevant technical terms.

This is where VokiDrill focuses. The learning units with specialist vocabulary are constantly being expanded.

Learning system for maximum efficient vocabulary learning

We see the so-called "Spaced Repetition" method as the most efficient way to keep vocabulary and basic grammar in long-term memory with minimal effort.

It works in such a way that the new word to learn is repeated regularly, but the time intervals between two repetitions increases. If a word has been forgotten, it ends up in the pool of vocabulary that you have to learn from scratch. So the word finally wanders into long-term memory, where it should then stay. We have had the best measurable results with an exponential increase in time intervals. The learning effort is significantly less than intensively repeating a word within a short period of time.

You found an error?

Although all vocabulary has been carefully checked, there may well be one or the other mistake. Confirmed errors are corrected immediately (app update is not required for this). We look forward to all feedback on errors or potentially incorrect vocabulary under:

Restore deleted user account

A hash of the username is stored on our server, as well as the date of its creation and the public key. If a user account is now deleted in the Settings menu, the hash of the username remains on the server and the user data remains locally on the mobile device.

The restoration works like this: You create a new account with the deleted username and the deleted two languages (mother tongue, language to be learned). The account is then immediately fully available again.

Set the duration of the learning unit

The duration of a learning unit can be set individually in the "Settings" menu.

Why does the learning unit not appear in the statistics?

For a learning unit to appear in the learning progress statistics, the following conditions must be met:
  • Only the interactive audio drill with speech recognition is shown in the learning statistics, but not the training mode.
  • If the learning unit is canceled after 1-2 minutes, it does not appear in the learning statistics.
  • The learning unit must be ended regularly, or by clicking the "End" button, so that it is included in the learning statistics.
